Court affirms Nordkalk’s permit for expansion in Klinthagen on Gotland
The Swedish Land and Environment Court of Appeal has today 25 January 2016 affirmed Nordkalk’s permit for the whole applied expansion of the existing quarry in Klinthagen on northern Gotland. The permit covers a continuation of the permit for the current quarry and an expansion area of 34 hectares to northwest. The verdict refers to the permit granted by the Land and Environment Court in November 2014.
The permit is valid until further notice and comprises of about 20 million tons of limestone of various qualities. This means that the activities can now continue to the current extent and that raw material is available for at least five years; several stone qualities up to ten years.
The exemption to the Habitats Directive was cancelled, as the court did not find it necessary. The permit includes execution, with the exception of a part of the expansion area. Execution for the whole area will be materialized when the verdict has gained legal force in February 2016.
- It was a relief to hear the verdict. Now we can plan the future activities in Klinthagen while we have more time to make plans for the long-term limestone supply on Gotland, says Mikael Lindberg, Unit Manager at Storugns on Gotland.
Limestone is a necessity for sustainable development in a modern society. Limestone is an environmental product that is very useful for the environment in many areas. Gotland has a long tradition of limestone excavation since the early 17th century, and it is the most important region in Sweden in terms of limestone supply. For Gotland, lime industry is important for employment and tax revenues. It is possible to extract limestone while adhering to high standards of environmental protection and respecting the nature.
